Note the group is not performing live, but it's always great to hear this classic piece. | Milt Buckner - Green Onions
Tags: Jazz
Description: Rare Track On Black & Blue label
Green Onions (D.Jones - S.Crooper )
From 1966-77, organist Milt Buckner recorded often for European labels. This particular set (originally cut for the Black & Blue label) was one of the very few to be made available domestically. It came out on Inner City's Classic Jazz subsidiary, and it is a bit of an oddity. Buckner, through overdubbing, performs on organ, piano and vibes (which he rarely played), and even takes an eccentric vocal on "Green Onions." To confuse matters, pianist Andre Persiany is also heard on some numbers, along with blues guitarist Roy Gaines, bassist Roland Lobligeois and drummer Panama Francis. The music itself is much less complicated, swing standards plus Buckner's "Pour Toutes Mes Soeurs" and "Milt's Boogie." Fun good-time music that will be difficult to find.
Milt Buckner - Organ, Piano, Vocals, Vibraphone
Roy Gaines - Guitar
Panama Francis - Drums
Roland Lobligeois - Bass
Andre Persiany -- Piano
-----------------------------------
One of the fathers of the funky organ sound and one of the inspirations for George Shearing's "locked hands" style of playing. Buckner played with McKinney's Cotton Pickers in the 1930s, then spent most of the 1940s with Lionel Hampton's big band. He struck out on his own, leading an unsuccessful big band that folded in 1949. He rejoined Hamp briefly, then left again to lead a trio. He recorded several classic albums for Capitol in the mid-1950s. Buckner pioneered the use of the electric organ as a substitute for a brass section, which proved an effective economy measure as the big band era ended. He began touring in Europe in the early 1960s, and gradually shifted most of his appearances there. In the early 1970s, he teamed with another Hampton alumnus, tenor sax man Illinois Jacquet, and they recorded a number of albums for European labels.

 | Green Onions (organ solo cover version)
Tags: Blues, Booker, Green, Hammond, Onions, Organ, Soul
Description: I've stayed as close as possible with my right hand to the organ solo in the original recording from 1962, and to get a full bass left hand sound I'm using a pedal tone with my thumb, in addition to the walking bass. I'm playing at around 140BPM as it is the tempo in the original recording.
The piano is an Yamaha P-120 with the jazz organ setting.
Green Onions was composed and first recorded by Booker T. and The M.G's in 1962.
