Harold Budd (24 de mayo de 1936) es un compositor americano. Nacido en Los Ángeles, California. Creció en el desierto de Mojave, hecho que pudo inspirar los sonidos que más tarde afloraron en sus obras.
El estilo en sus primeros trabajos era una mezcla extraña de jazz popular y vanguardia. En 1976 comienza a grabar sus nuevas composiciones, producidas por el pionero ambiental británico Brian Eno. Dos años más tarde el álbum de debut Pavilion of Dreams fue editado.
Desde entonces ha desarrollado un estilo único y poderoso en la música ambiental. Sus dos colaboraciones con Brian Eno, The Plateaux of Mirror y The Pearl, establecieron su marca registrada como estilo de piano atmosférico. En Lovely Thunder introdujo texturas electrónicas sutiles. Últimamente tiene un acercamiento a estructuras más minimalistas.
Su álbum Avalon Sutra del 2004 es el último de Harold Budd. En él se resume treinta años de actividad musical sostenida. Budd sólo comenta que hace lo que siente. Y con humildad concluye, "no me opongo a desaparecer"
Su discografía es abundante, así como las composiciones escritas para películas. Traigo aquí un extracto de la considerada ya como una obra maestra del cine de animación Ghost in the shell, donde la ambientación de los dibujos recreando un próximo futuro con las suaves notas del tema A child in a sylvan field tema del álbum Dawn's Early Light crean un ambiente irrepetible.

This is from the Haunted series - one of many horror anthology slots on British TV in the 1970s.
