 | La Partida - played on Paraguayan harp
Tags: Harp, Music, Paraguayan, Partida, Venezuela, Venezuelan
Description: Well - actually it's called "Quiero ser tu sombra" (wanna be your shadow), apparently by Hector Quattromanos and Zulema Alcayaga. I first heard this piece on the web, and learned it from there, complete with the wrong title! Anyway, apologies to Hector and Zulema! It's such a great piece - I love the slinkiness of it (if that's not a word, it is now). The Paraguayan harp is amazing - the sound on this recording is just noise-reduced, no other audio treatment - you can hear the sparkly treble and deep bass. The harp has guitar-type tuners (machine heads) which can be a bit fiddly near the middle of the harp, where it curves inwards. You hardly have to touch the strings to make it work - and when you play loud, the strings have the characteristic "twang" which you can use for special effects. I bought it at the Stamford Harp Festival and there's a rolled-up banknote in the end of the harp at the top - I can't get it out so who knows what it's worth! Apparently people would put banknotes in between the strings or into the top, as a tip. If you're a harpist, you might spot that the strings don't follow the conventional colours because Paraguayan harps have the C string in blue, and the F string in red, the reverse of other harps.
I'm playing it in my annex, which was a bakery serving the local houses, built around 1790 - that's the bread oven in the stone wall behind me. This is another of my late-night recordings, and it's the first complete take - so there's the odd rough bit.
The arrangement and video is my copyright. You are welcome to learn and play the arrangement if you like it - but please credit me if you play it in public. If you like it, I'll post more music.
The video was recorded using a 3-CCD camera direct to hard disk, and I used Cool Edit Pro to noise reduce the audio and Adobe Premiere Pro for picture correction. If you want a higher-quality file to download and put on your computer, leave me a message and I'll send you the link.

 | Carolan's Dream - played on celtic harp
Tags: Carolan, Celtic, Clarsach, Harp, Irish, Music, O'Carolan
Description: Turlough O'Carolan was an irish harpist who lived in the mid-1600s and wrote pieces for the people he met and stayed with - playing music in exchange for hospitality. Tradition has it that the harp was played last thing at night, before people went to bed.
The building I'm playing it in was a bakery built around 1790, serving the local houses. The bread oven is in the stone wall behind me, and the building has a new floor and triple-glazing on the windows. It's a great mixture of old and new and a great place to play this music.
Appropriately, I recorded this piece very late one night, and just went with the first take so the playing has the odd rough bits. I like to think that's authentic - apparently Carolan never played the same way twice. Bet he never had as much trouble as I did finding DivX codecs, either!
Only the melodies survive, so I've done this arrangement myself and I'm playing it here on a Pilgrim gut-strung harp. The arrangement and video is my copyright. You are welcome to learn and play the arrangement (by ear - I haven't written it down!) if you like it - but please credit me if you play it in public. If you like it, I'll post more music.
To make the recording I used a Sony 3-CCD camera direct to hard disk, with one audio take, noise-reduced in Cool Edit Pro, with Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the visuals together. If you want a higher-quality file to download and keep on your computer, just send me a message.

I'm sorry for the lousy sound. I don't have anything else right now than a webcam to record videos and music. I use quite dramatic dynamic changes, but it is almost unhearable when recorded with a webcam.
Pachelbel Canon is one of my most favorite pieces to play since I was introduced to it a few years ago by my teacher.

Rendezvous II by Jean-Michel Jarre - (no copyright infringement intended).I need some practice playing it, it's all in the fingertips!
Just to clarify, It really works and I am *playing* (not miming) along to the Jean Michel Jarre track - and the track does have the laser harp notes on it (it's from the album) - but I do play a bit without at the end - just to confirm it does work.
Heh, no one was more cynical than me about the original laser harp - so I guess I proved it to myself.
I'll be putting together some "how-to-build-it" videos over the next few weeks - stay tuned!

Finally got the bugs worked out with the sensor. The harp is driven by an Arduino (Boarduino varation) and connected to the impOSCar VSTi software synthesizer, the TAOS sensor array sits on the floor in it's own stand. The array above the harp i is just made up of fs mirrors for added p'zazz.
Complete plans, schematics and source code will be available soon on my website.
The harp does respond to hand distance from the sensor, but that can sometimes go awry - so I switched it off for the demo.
