Description: Iraqi Maqam المقام العراقي
Maqam Hijaz Diwan مقام حجاز ديوان
This basic maqam belongs to the hijaz mode. Its composite name suggests the importance of the two degrees hijaz (F sharp) and diwan (A). It is sung without rhythmic accompaniment until the meyana then to the 4/4 wahda rhythm until the end. *
First part:
- Musical introduction in hijaz mode to the 6/4 sengin sama'i rhythm.
- Unmeasured prelude on the santur in hijaz mode, introducing the subject of the tahrir.
- Tahrir in hijaz mode on the words "faryade men", beginning on F sharp and resting on the A.
- Sung verses in hijaz mode interspersed with instrumental interludes.
- A piece in huseyni mode returning to hijaz on the vowel "ouh".
- Verses beginning in hijaz and ending with a cadenza of the maqam rast called "Negriz".
- Jalsa ending the first part on the tonic F sharp of hijaz mode.
The second part is dominated by the 4/4 wahda rhythm.
- Meyana in hijaz called "Atchugh" beginning with a sayha (yell) on the words "ya leil".
- A vocal piece "Shahnaz" in hijaz mode on the words "ya leili".
- A few verses in hijaz mode descending one octave to the tonic.
(continued in second video)
The qasida is by the Iraqi poet Abdul Ghaffar al-Akhras (1810-1873):
قصيده الشاعر العراقي عبد الغفار الأخرس ١٨١٠-١٨٧٣
The lover has fallen ill again.
He lies in bed, could you visit him?
Be merciful, O doves, sing!
Your cooing will appease the soul of he who is devoured by passion.
A glance provokes love sickness.
A glance that is both remedy and sickness.
Have pity on lovers
They are martyrs to your passion
Choosing separation,
Is it a fair reward?

Description: - A piece called "Kazzaz" in bayat mode ending with the command "aman aman". *
- Instrumental interlude.
- A piece in saba mode on D.
- An extract from "Hijaz shaytani" in hijaz mode.
- A piece in huseyni mode.
- Final teslim in hijaz with a descent to the tonic on the bidding "aman aman".
- Peste, "Murru bina min timshun", traditional Baghdadi song. مروا بنا من تمشون
Song in hijaz mode, to the 6/4 sengin sama'i rhythm:
Refrain: Come to see us when you go away
You will weep perhaps at my pitiful state,
Sanity has left me, my head is mad,
I keep watch at night, I no longer sleep,
Bring me back my love, O Muslims.
I run after them in bare feet,
My aba thrown over my shoulders.
A single glance from the brown-haired one will suffice,
He has made use of me with his anger.
(Refrain)
I run after them and cry,
Sometimes I totter, sometimes I fall,
There is not a single bone left whole in my body.
(Refrain)
Do not move away from the door
For fear your lock touches the dusty ground.
O my little one, O my grain of linseed.
(Refrain)
O my mother, panic takes hold of me.
I can not speak from the top of the wall,
Her mother may catch her by surprise.
(Refrain)
