 | Roisin Dubh, (Dark Rosaleen) Traditional Irish Song
Tags: Acapella, Celtic, Day, Dubh, Eire, Erin, folk, Gaelic, Ireland, Irish, McColgan, Molly, Patricks, political, Roisin, Rose, song, St.
Description: 3-3-08 As requested, here are the lyrics in English and in Irish. I only sang two of the Irish verses:
O MY Dark Rosaleen,
Do not sigh, do not weep!
The priests are on the ocean green,
They march along the deep.
There 's wine from the royal Pope,
Upon the ocean green;
And Spanish ale shall give you hope,
My Dark Rosaleen!
My own Rosaleen!
Shall glad your heart, shall give you hope,
Shall give you health, and help, and hope,
My Dark Rosaleen!
Over hills, and thro' dales,
Have I roam'd for your sake;
All yesterday I sail'd with sails
On river and on lake.
The Erne, at its highest flood,
I dash'd across unseen,
For there was lightning in my blood,
My Dark Rosaleen!
My own Rosaleen!
O, there was lightning in my blood,
Red lightning lighten'd thro' my blood.
My Dark Rosaleen!
All day long, in unrest,
To and fro, do I move.
The very soul within my breast
Is wasted for you, love!
The heart in my bosom faints
To think of you, my Queen,
My life of life, my saint of saints,
My Dark Rosaleen!
My own Rosaleen!
To hear your sweet and sad complaints,
My life, my love, my saint of saints,
My Dark Rosaleen!
Woe and pain, pain and woe,
Are my lot, night and noon,
To see your bright face clouded so,
Like to the mournful moon.
But yet will I rear your throne
Again in golden sheen;
'Tis you shall reign, shall reign alone,
My Dark Rosaleen!
My own Rosaleen!
'Tis you shall have the golden throne,
'Tis you shall reign, and reign alone,
My Dark Rosaleen!
Over dews, over sands,
Will I fly, for your weal:
Your holy delicate white hands
Shall girdle me with steel.
At home, in your emerald bowers,
From morning's dawn till e'en,
You'll pray for me, my flower of flowers,
My Dark Rosaleen!
------------------
A Róisín, ná bíodh brón ort ná chás anois
tá do phárdún ó'n Róimh agus ó'n bPápa agat
tá na bráithre ag teacht thar
sáile agus ag tríall thar muir
'S ni ceilfear fíon Spáinneach ar mo Róisín Dubh
Tá grá agam i mo lár dhuit le blíain anois
grá cráite, grá cásmhar, grá ciapaithe
grá a d'fhág mé gan sláinte, gan rían, gan ruith
is go bráth, bráth, gan aon fháil a
leagadh ar mo Róisín Dubh

So...this song is quite different from anything of uploaded here! Many of you may not like this style as it is, one, in a different language, and two, acapella, but here goes anyway...
In honor of St. Patricks Day, only a month away, and in honor of my Irish roots and family, I've decided to put it up.
Here's a brief history lesson about Irealnd children ;)
Roisin Dubh (pronounced; row sheen dove) means Little Dark Rose or Dark Rosaleen in Gaelic. It's a traiditional Irish song that dates back to somewhere around the 16th-19th century and is one of Irelands most famous political songs. In a time where the Irish were not allowed to sing proud songs about their country, many songs arose that seemed to be about women or other subject matters, but were really a pseudonym for Ireland herself :) My Dark Rosaleen is Ireland.
I hope you enjoy this bit of celtic flavor and if not, try not to be too harsh :) It is sung acapella as many Irish songs are traditionally sung. Enjoy!

Description: Another one of my favorite songs. In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, here it is...Danny Boy.
From wiki:
...and many listeners among Irish-Americans, where the song enjoys its greatest popularity, regard it as the tender goodbye of a dying parent to a son who is going off to military service...

 | Here Come The Irish (song about Notre Dame)

Description: "Here Come The Irish" with John Scully '80.
Is it the campus, with its Golden Dome and Basilica rising above the quads? Or is it the powerful campus liturgies and sacred quiet of the Grotto?
Is it the intense commitment of faculty who ignite our students' learning? Or the thriving community in the dorms, where bonds are developed that link alumni for life? Is it the storied traditions of Fighting Irish athletics?
Or is it something more? Something that can only be described as the spirit of Notre Dame -- a distinctive combination of faith, academics, service, athletics, and community.

Description: song:another Irish drinking song
artist:da vinic's notebook
(lyric's)
Gather 'round, ye lads and lasses, set ye for a while
And hearken to me mournful tale about the Emerald Isle
Let's all raise our glasses high to friends and family gone
And lift our voices in another Irish drinking song
Consumption took me mother and me father got the pox
Me brother drank the whiskey 'til he wound up in a box
My other brother in the Troubles met with his demise
My sister has forever closed her smiling Irish eyes
CHORUS:
Now everybody's died
So until our tears are dried
We'll drink and drink and drink and drink,
and then we'll drink some more
We'll dance and sing and fight
until the early morning light
Then we'll throw up, pass out, wake up, and then go drinking once again
Kenny was killed in Kilkenny and Claire, she died in Clare
Tip from Tipperary died out in the Derry air
Shannon jumped into the River Shannon back in June
Ernie fell into the Erne, and Tom is in the Toome
"Cleanliness is godliness" me Uncle Pat would sing
He broke his neck a'slippin' on a bar of Irish Spring
O'Grady, he was 80 though his bride was just a pup
He died upon the honeymoon when she got his Irish up
CHORUS
Joe Murphy fought with Reilly near the banks of old Doneen
He took out his shillelagh and he stabbed him in the spleen
Crazy Uncle Mike believed he was a leprechaun -
In fact he's just a leper, and his arms and legs are gone
When Timmy Johnson broke his neck it was a cryin' shame
He wasn't really Irish, but he went to Notre Dame
McNamara crossed the street and by a bus was hit
But he was just a Scotsman, so nobody gave a (ARRGHH)
CHORUS
Me drunken Uncle Brendan tried to drive home from the bar
The road rose up to meet him when he fell out of his car
Irony was what befell my great-grand Uncle Sam
He choked upon the very last potato in the land
Conor lived in Ulster town, he used to smuggle arms
Until the British killed him and cut off his lucky charms
And dear old Father Flanagan, who left the lord's employ
Drunk on sacramental wine, beneath the altar boy
CHORUS
(slower)
Someday soon I'll leave this world of pain and toil and sin
The Lord will take me by the hand to join all of me kin
Me only wish is when the Savior comes for me and you
(a tempo)
He kills the cast of Riverdance, and Michael Flatley too
CHORUS (2x)

Tags: altan, ballad, clannad, donegal, enya, francie, gaelic, glen, gweedore, ireland, irish, maoanigh, mooney, music, song, traditional
Description: Classic Irish song about Gweedore and the glens that surround the area.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleannt%C3%A1in_Ghlas%27_Ghaoth_Dobhair
It is being performed by Altan.
Written by Francie Mooney.
Céad slán ag sléibhte maorga chondae Dhún na nGall
Agus dhá chéad slán ag an Earagal ard, ina stua os cionn caor 's call
Nuair a ghluais mise thart le loch Dhún Lúich, go ciúin sa ghleann ina luí
I mo dhiaidh bhí Gleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair, is beag nár bhris mo chroí.
Ag taisteal domh amach fríd chnoic Ghleann Domhain, 's an Mhucais ar mo chúl
Ní miste domh 'rá le brón 's le crá, ghur fhreasach a shil mise súil
Go 'Meiriceá siar, a bhí mo thriall, i bhfad thar an fharraige mhór
D'fhág mé slán ar feadh seal ag Dún na nGall, 's ag Gleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair.
Níorbh é mo mhiansa imeacht ariamh ó mo thír bheag dhílis féin
Ach trom lámh Gall, le cluain 's le feall, a thiomáin mé i gcéin
B'é rún mo chroí'se pilleadh arís, nuair a dhéanfainn beagán stór
'S deireadh mo shaoil a chaitheamh le'm ghaoil, fá Ghleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair.
Slán, slán go fóill a Dhún na nGall, a chondae shéimh gan smál
'S do d'fheara breá in am an ghá, nár umhlaigh riamh roimh Ghall
Tá áit i mo chroí do gach fear a gach mnaoi, 's gach páiste beag agus mór
Atá beo go buan, gan bhuairt gan ghruaim, fá Ghleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair.
English translation:
Farewell to the noble mountains of Donegal
And twice farewell to tall Erigal, arching over rowen and ash tree
When I passed by Dunlewey Lake, lying quietly in the glen
Behind me were the green glens of Gaoth Dobhair, and it nearly broke my heart
Traveling through Glendowan's Hills, and Muckish behind me
I don't mind saying with sorrow and grief, that tears fell from my eyes
Westward to America was my journey, far across the wide sea
I said farewell for a while to Donegal, and the green glens of Gaoth Dobhair
I never wanted to leave my own beloved land
But the foreigner's heavy handed deceipt and treachery drove me away
It would be my heart's desire to return again, when I should get a little money
To spend the end of my life with my family, 'round the green glens of Gaoth Dobhair
Yet farewell, farewell to Donegal County fine and fair
And to your brave men who in time of need, did not ever cower before the foreigner
There's a place in my heart for each man and woman, each child big and small
Who live in peace, without sorrow or grief, in the green glens of Gaoth Dobhair
