 | Jane Barbe & John Doyle: You Know Their Voices, but...
Tags: Announcements, dial, error, repair, ring
Description: This clip is from around 1982. Apparently people used to stop Jane Barbe on the street or in the supermarket and beg her to just "tell us what time it is!" She had one of the most recognized voices in the world when the telephone was the primary means of communication. Most northern Californians remember dialing the seven digits P-O-P-C-O-R-N and hearing the woman say "The time is...eight o'clock..and thirty seconds..." Another message from her hit parade was the soothing, businesslike message, "We're sorry. Your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and dial again, or call your operator for assistance" or, later in her career, "Dial 1 for more options." In August, 2007 AT&T announced on their customer's bills: "Effective September 2007, Time of Day information service will be discontinued." California and Nevada were the last two to discontinue the "time lady."
Although born in Florida, Jane grew up in Atlanta where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia. A job as band singer with the Buddy Morrow Orchestra led to creating and producing commercials and industrial films. John Franklin founded the Audichron Company in Atlanta in the 1930s. His company leased "talking clock " technology to phone companies nationwide. In the 1950s a lady named Mary Moore emerged as the recorded voice of the time. Her distinctive pronunciation of numbers such as "Nye-un" or Fye-ov" was fodder for comedians for years to come (i.e. Lily Tomlin's "cord board" character Ernestine). Jane Barbe succeeded Ms. Moore in the 1960s and became the most prolific telephone voice until her retirement in 2003. Although her casual speech had a slight southern twang, she refined an "accent-less" manner of speech for her telephone and voice over work. She died in Roswell Georgia at the age of 74 on July 18, 2003. Several recorded samples of her messages may be heard at Bell System Memorial page: porticus . org.
John Doyle is still heard throughout a large portion of the U.S. and Canada. A native of Savannah, GA, he grew up in North Carolina. Doyle graduated from the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in radio, television and motion picture arts. A long time employee (or rather, "star") of Audichron Company, Doyle's voice is heard coast-to-coast reporting time, weather, and sometimes hotel wakeup calls (You didn't think that was the desk man, did you?). He is especially adept at narration and has been hired by AT&T, Lockheed and IBM for their corporate films. In Georgia he is known as "The Voice of WWW."

 | John McCusker Michael McGoldrick John Doyle Trio
Tags: John, JohnDoyle, McCusker, McGoldrick, Michael, UnderOneSky
Description: Second clip from the Hammersmith Irish Centre.I've been corrected on these tunes too , so generally feel bit stupid! Anyway, they're McCusker tunes, and the first two are from his new commission for Celtic Connections 2007, called Under One Sky. The others may be Johnny's jig, and One mile up the road [from the Tunnocks factory], but if they're not let me know! Last night at Birmingham was even better than these videos, but sadly no cameras were allowed...
