It would be impossible to overstate the impact that JOHN SINCLAIR has made on the city of Detroit. Initially gaining notoriety as a poet and de-facto leader of the local counter-culture movement, John became notorious as the head of The White Panther Party and as the manager/political strategist of the MC5. He became an international symbol of Revolution when John Lennon rose to his defense after he was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for possession of two joints. Currently based out of Amsterdam, he just happened to be visiting Detroit while we were recording and was generous enough to bring his iBook full of poetry uptown to 54 Sound.

 | Ten For Two - The John Sinclair Benefit - Part 1
Tags: david, jerry, john, lennon, ono, peel, rubin, sinclair, stevie, wonder, yoko
Description: The cause for this documentary is that, in 1970 or 71, John Sinclair was sentenced to a ten year prison term for possession of two marijuana cigarettes; hence the documentary's title, Ten for Two. This was no ordinary drug bust, as Sinclair was the head of the Rainbow People's Party and the sentence he received was, in everyone's minds, political punishment not commensurate with his crime. In protest, a large number of performers and counter-culture protestors gathered for a concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The concert featured Stevie Wonder, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Alan Ginsberg and many others. Political figures included Black Panther leader Bobby Seale, Rennie Davis and Jerry Rubin, to name just a few.

Description: Me on my dobro mucking around with a rather obscure John Lennon song called "John Sinclair", which is the reason I first wanted to get a dobro when I heard John Lennon playing one. The story about this song is Lennon wrote it for a John Sinclair Freedom Rally in 1972 to get Mucician / Poet Sinclair released from prison, as he was facing 10 years for offering 2 joints to an undercover cop.
Thankyou to MrHashbash for correcting my loose facts and adding more;
Hey man great video, however your facts in your description are wrong.
I only tell you this because I work with John Sinclair as his road manager and merch guru and I know his story and that ain't it.
John was in MICHIGAN. Not NY.
ATTICA STATE was another John Lennon song on the same album that JOHN SINCLAIR was on SOMETIME IN NEW YORK CITY.
Lennon did come to Ann Arbor MI and play at the JOHN SINCLAIR FREEDOM RALLY CONCERT which was filmed and never released as the mover TEN FOR TWO, hence John's sentence Ten years for two joints
Just thought you muight be intereted and want to correct you description

The Permanent Peoples' Tribunal: 2nd Session on the Philippines is a major part of the campaign of the Filipino people to expose, condemn and fight the crimes of the Gloria Macapagal - Arroyo regime and its principal foreign accomplice. The United States, particularly the Bush administration, is the force behind the intensification of exploitation and oppression of the Filipino people as well as the peoples of the world.
The Permanent Peoples' Tribunal is an international opinion tribunal, independent from any State authority. It examines and judges complaints regarding violations of human rights and rights of peoples that are submitted by the victums themselves or groups representing them.
John Sinclair is legendary as the manager of the rock-and-revolution MC-5 and as the political prisoner in the early days of the War on Drugs whose 1971 release from a 9-1/2-to-10-year sentence for possession of two joints was secured by high-profile supporters like John Lennon and Stevie Wonder.
A marijuana activist since 1964, Sinclair has served as the High Priest of the Cannabis Cup and has recently had a potent strain of Dutch marijuana named in his honor. He was also honored in Foggia, Italy, as the International recipient of the Targa Matteo Salvatore for 2006.
