I remember seeing Klaus Nomi for the first time on the BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1979 and I thought how peculiarly odd he was.....with that female soprano voice, his odd appearance and a pop sensibility to-boot, he was bizarre and brilliant.
Klaus had made an impact on new-wave music in the late 70's and was working to break into the pop mainstream just before he died. His first love however, was Opera.
In this video, Klaus sings Purcell's strange aria The Cold Song from the English 17th century baroque opera King Arthur
The opera's composer Purcell died in 1695 from incurable T.B. aged 36, while in 1983 Klaus sadly died succumbing to complications due to Aids, aged 39. Both men were remarkably talented but died so young.

The Lyrics to this old aria are strangely prophetic. Watching it now, knowing what a difficult time Klaus was having, just adds to its intensity and sadness

Ladies and gentlemen, no tricks were used. It was the original voice of Klaus Nomi, live in the studio. He sings mezzo soprano, which is very rare. This is a real opera voice, but it wasn't enough for him and he was looking for more. He went to America, had big success. It wasn't the first time that someone who grew up in Germany, went to America to become famous and went back. Now welcome to Klaus Nomi!

Klaus: How are you?
Host: May I give this to you.
Klaus: Thank you.
Host: I feel good. Now I am a host with the right chairs.
Klaus: Thank you very much. Oh ... .
Host: Oh, the rump makes trouble.

Klaus: Yeah, I always wanted to sing mezzo soprano, but it was a problem in the school. My teachers were against it.
Host: Really?
Klaus: Yes, they thought it was only something for women.
Host: Oh, I don't think so. I mean if someone has such a wonderful voice and talent then he should do it.
Klaus: Yes, of course.
Host: But then came New York and ... poor guy ... and you sing more rock?
Klaus: Yes, among others. But I use the classical element too.
Host: So you use both very evenly.
Klaus: Yeah, some songs on my LP are classic songs like the aria. It is a song from Henry Purcell.
Host: Yes, this was from "Samson et Delilah"?
Klaus: Yes.
Host: By Strauss?
Klaus: No, not quite. Saint--Saiens.
Host: I am not that good with french people. Ok, good. Klaus now I would say we hear a more rocking Klaus Nomi but with elements of the mezzo soprano voice. Ok?
Klaus: Yeah, of course.
