Laure Manaudou of France won the women's 400-meter freestyle final at the world swimming championships on Sunday to successfully defend the title she won in Montreal two years ago. Manaudou, 20, led from start to finish to win the gold in four minutes, 2.61 seconds, the second fastest time in history and just 0.48 seconds outside the world record of 4:02.13 that she set in Budapest last year. Laure Manaudou, née le 9 octobre 1986 à Villeurbanne (Rhône), est une nageuse française de nage libre (200, 400, 800, 1500 mètres), de dos (50 et 100 mètres) et du 4 nages (200 et 400 mètres).
Licenciée jusqu'en 2006 au Cercle des nageurs de Melun Val de Seine où elle était entraînée par Philippe Lucas, elle rejoint le club de Canet-en-Roussillon (Canet 66 natation) avec son entraîneur après les Championnats d'Europe de natation 2006.
En mai 2007, elle quitte son entraîneur pour aller s'entraîner dans le club turinois de LaPresse Nuoto. Suite à des tensions apparues avec son entraîneur Paolo Penso, elle est licenciée par son club italien le 6 août. De septembre 2007 à janvier 2008, elle est entraînée par son frère aîné, Nicolas, à Ambérieu-en-Bugey (Ain).
Depuis le 21 janvier 2008, elle s'entraîne à Mulhouse sous la direction de Lionel Horter, entraîneur au pôle France et ancien entraîneur de Roxana Maracineanu.

400m Freestyle race. Then, to add insult to injury, Laure Manaudou's

Pellegrini, who also turned her back on Laure on Sunday. The only way
Laure can prevail and salvage a wrecked career is to beat Federica
Pellegrini in the finals on Wednesday. I'm rooting for Laure Manaudou,
as she's been through far too much and is too talented for the
treatment she's gotten. What's fascinating about this is the level of
attention female swimmers are given in Europe; much more than in the
United States. Swimmers like Laure and Federica appear on talk shows
and in the front page of magazines, and are chased by photographers.
It's an interesting cultural development.

Manaudou quit the Olympics, skipping the final and her chance to redeem herself with a victory over Federica Pellegrini,
