Songtext/lyrics

What do we know about Niemann-Pick Disease (NPD) and Types A, B, and C. There is even a Type D which is closely related to Type C. The Name Niemann-Pick derives from two German Pediatricians. Albert Niemann, the first doctor to identify Type A in 1914, and Ludwick Pick, who first identified Type B in 1927. Niemann-Pick Disease (NPD) is closely related to Alzheimer's Disease. and is often called The Childhood Alzheimer's. Patients with NPD Type C are not able to metabolize cholesterol properly in lysosomes. Consequently, excessive amounts of cholesterol accumulate within the liver, spleen, and brain. Signs and Symptoms of Type A may include: feeding difficulties, large abdomen within 3-6 months, a loss of early motor skills, and a rapid decline in the child after 6 months, leading to death by 2 to 3 years of age. In Contrast, the severity and onset of Type B is very variable. Some patients with Type B develop repeated respiratory infections & breathing problems. Life Expectancy of Type B is highly variable, depending on the severity of the symptoms. Type C NPD usually affects children of school age but the disease can strike at any time from early infancy to adulthood. Symptoms of NPD Type C may include jaundice, a large spleen and/or liver, difficulty with upward and downward eye movement. Other symptoms include: clumsiness, and problems in walking, controlling limb movement, slurred or irregular speech, learning difficulties, inability to swallow, and other neurological abnormalities. Life Expectancy of Type C NPD is variable depending on the severity of the symptoms. However, life expectancy after diagnosis is merely 6 - 10 years. Children seldom survive beyond their 15th birthday. With the discovery in 1997 of the primary gene associated with NPD-C, medical research has intensified worldwide. Ara Parseghian, former head coach for University of Notre Dame, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980, lost his three grandchildren to NPD Type C. his Grandson, Michael, his Granddaughter, Christa, who passed away at the age of 10 in October 2001, and his Granddaughter Marcia, who passed away at the age of 16, in 2005. NPD is considered an important link in the battles against heart disease, Alzheimer's, stroke and seizure disorders. Join us, in finding a cure for NPD, and Help us Save Gabrielle LaVerde, a first grade student diagnosed with NPD Type C in October, 2007.

Description: A description to follow, but for now I'm speechless... and when does that ever happen? NEVER! Thank you to Danielle, for her unselfish and genuine love for children everywhere that are suffering from this fatal disease, Niemann-Pick.... her priority is to help others, even though her daughter is suffering from this fatal disease, called Niemann-Pick Type C.
Thanks to Reckless, Logan, Penelope, Skye, the guinea pigs, Taz, and Tinsel Town, who seem to be in all of my movies cause they're so photogenic, and to http://www.walking-on-sunshine-animal-rescue.org

I want to continue to help dogs, and all animals in this crazy world we live in, that's riddened with euthanasia practices and animal over population, not to mention animal abuse and cruelty, but for now, my focus is on Gabrielle LaVerde and Niemann-Pick Disease Type C.
Why? Because it's what God is asking me to do.

Description: http://www.GabrielleLaVerde.com
This is MY community, MY son's school, and MY son's classmate, and though you may not personally know Gabrielle, most of you personally know ME. You know you can reach me anytime, by emailing me here, and many of you have my personal email address, and even my phone number! I am real, and so is Gabrielle LaVerde, and so are the stories that my son shares with me every single day about the donations that his classmates raised for one little girl.
I have been publishing youtube videos for almost one year now. Prior to that, I was publishing animal welfare videos on my personal website, long before Youtube ever existed.
I believe that my efforts have helped many achieve awareness and results. However, the main reason why I want to abolish the puppy mill trade, irresponsible breeding of dogs and cats, and to put an end to animal over-population is because of the trillions of dollars that the general public donates to save the American pet. In actuality, if I could help stop the plight of the American dog and cat, I believe genuinely caring people would redirect their focus to other causes that go unnoticed. Other causes go unnoticed (like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Cancer, Autism, Depression, etc.) because our dog and cat situation is so grim.
I look at the number of years that national and international animal welfare groups have been in existance, working as non-profits, who employ thousands, and yet, our situation has only become worse. Every year, Millions of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE animals, especially dogs, but somehow we have lost our ability to care and nurture people.
Last week, my son, Ryan, asked me to get involved and help his classmate Gabrielle LaVerde. I learned more and more about this little girl's situation.
Not only do I receive mountains of emails from those wanting to help, I also discuss the situation with Gabrielle's mother, Danielle, almost on a daily basis.
However, yesterday, I visited my son's school. While my focus is creating a national presence through venues like Youtube, I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. Gabrielle's Elementary School Classmates are lining up outside of the school's office with their donations every day. Children carrying jars and piggy banks, asking to donate. It's creating quite an emotional impact on the employees that work there. After all of the change is counted, daily contributions are announced over the loud speakers.
These kids have done, and continue to do everything they can possibly think of, to help Save Gabrielle LaVerde from Niemann-Pick Type C, which is a fatal disease. We all know that there is a chance, a sliver of hope, that with experimental treatments, Gabrielle might live.
Now, I find myself consumed with the thought that I have not done enough, even though my involvement has only been less than 1 short week.
This is NOT High School, The Musical - this is Elementary School, the little Heroes.

http://www.GabrielleLaVerde.com The first eighteen months or so of her life were wonderful. She was a happy, sweet, smiling little girl, with big, sparkling eyes and she had the best belly laugh we'd ever heard. She started walking later than most, but was toddling around by 15 months. At 18 months we began to notice that she was not quite keeping up with other kids her age. By her second birthday, we knew something was wrong. Her pediatrician thought she was "perfect" and she would "catch up" at the the age three. By her third birthday, it was even clearer to us that she was having difficulty with her speech and gait. Her balance and coordination were not what they should be. Her fine and motor gross skills, speech, sight and hearing were tested. Mild Cerebral Palsy was mentioned. A new doctor mentioned that she had connective tissue issues, hyperflexible joings and nearly flat feet. He scheduled a Behavioral Pediatrician, a Geneticist, and a Neurologist. The Behaviorial Pediatrician worked with us for 1 year, and ruled out Autism. The Geneticist and Neurologist after 2 years, and countless blood tests, EEGs, MRIs and CT scans, everything was negative, except that Gabrielle was having "absence seizures". Seizure medications were discontinued after Gabrielle could no longer hold a fork or sit up. We tried the best doctors in Orlando, when finally we went to Jacksonville and met a Neuro-Muscularist. Her Geneticist thought she had mitochondrial disorder. 4 months later, everything was negative. After insisting for answers, he recommended the Kennedy-Krieger Institute at John Hopkins. Gabrielle was seen the Movement Disorders Department & the Neurology Dept. This was 2007, and Gabrielle was 5. The opinion was a progressive degenerative disease. That was a huge blow for us. We then went to a specialist in Brandon, Florida who did a skin biopsy to rule out Niemann-Pick. Six weeks later, the results were positive, and our answer was daughter's death sentence.
