Description: The Penguin Cafe Orchestra was a loose assembly of musicians headed by classically-trained guitarist, composer and arranger Simon Jeffes (Sussex, England, 1949-1997). Only Jeffes and cellist co-founder Helen Liebmann were core members; other musicians were drafted for the requirements of particular pieces or performances. Its sound does not fit easy categorization, but has elements of exuberant folk music and a minimalist aesthetic occasionally reminiscent of Philip Glass.
The Penguin Cafe Orchestra recorded and performed for 24 years until Jeffes died of a brain tumour in 1997.
Music From The Penguin Cafe was the first album by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and was recorded between 1974 and 1976, and released in 1976. The line-up for much of the album consisted of the original Penguin Cafe Quartet: Simon Jeffes (electric guitar), Helen Leibmann (Cello), Steve Nye (electric piano), and Gavyn Wright (violin). The executive producer for the album was Brian Eno, who released this album under his experimental E.G. Records label, with this particular issue coming under the "Obscure" sub-label as "Obscure 7". The cover painting was by Emily Young.
