Description: Molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn--one of Time magazine's 100 "Most Influential People in the World" in 2007--made headlines in 2004 when she was dismissed from the President's Council on Bioethics after objecting to the council's call for a moratorium on stem cell research and protesting the suppression of relevant scientific evidence in its final report. But it is Blackburn's groundbreaking work on telomeric DNA, which launched the field of telomere research, that will have the more profound and long-lasting effect on science and society. In this compelling biography ("Elizabeth Blackburn and the Story of Telomeres: Deciphering the Ends of DNA"), Catherine Brady tells the story of Elizabeth Blackburn's life and work and the emergence of a new field of scientific research on the specialized ends of chromosomes and the telomerase enzyme that extends them.
Catherine Brady is Assistant Professor in the MFA in Writing Program at the University of San Francisco. She is the author of two collections of short stories, The End of the Class War and Curled in the Bed of Love (a winner of the 2002 Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction).
This event took place on June 19, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

Tags: "The, Jackendoff, Linguistics, Logic, of, Peculiar, Ray, Value"
Description: Jackendoff's talk on "The Peculiar Logic of Value" centers on how humans conceptualize systems of value. He hypothesizes that value is conceptualized as an abstract property attributed to objects, persons, and actions. There are several distinct types of value, including Affective value (does it feel good or bad?); Utility (is it good for me?); Prowess (is so-and-so good at doing such-and-such); Normative value (is it good of so-and-so to do such-and-such?); Personal Normative value (is so-and-so a good person?); and Esteem (does so-and-so have a good reputation?). Each of these kinds of value plays a different role in the ecology of the value system.
Ray Jackendoff is Seth Merrin Professor of Philosophy and Codirector of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University. He is the author of many books, including "Foundations of Language".
This event took place August 30, 2007 at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

Description: Akbar Ganji, called by some "Iran's most famous dissident," was a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. But, troubled by the regime's repressive nature, he became an investigative journalist in the 1990s, writing for Iran's pro-democracy newspapers. Most notably, he traced the murders of dissident intellectuals to Iran's secret service. In 2000 Ganji was arrested, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from working as a journalist. His eighty-day hunger strike during his last year in prison mobilized the international human rights community.
The Road to Democracy in Iran, Ganji's first book in English, demonstrates his lifelong commitment to human rights and democracy. A passionate call for universal human rights and the right to democracy from a Muslim perspective, it lays out the goals and means of Iran's democracy movement, why women's rights trump some interpretations of Islamic law, and how the West can help promote democracy in Iran (he strongly opposes U.S. intervention) and other Islamic countries.
Abbas Milani serves as Ganji's translator.
This event took place on October 22, 2008

Traditional "left-brain" activities like logic, analysis, and repetitive production are being turned over to robots, computers, and offshore labor. The valued skills of 21st century will be those of the right brain: empathy, design, synthesis, and contextual thinking. Author and lecturer Daniel Pink tells you: How abundance, Asia, and automation are changing the world; Why "routine" is the scariest word in the English language; How old line companies like GM and Proctor & Gamble are responding; What six abilities matter most in the emerging age. Description: Provided by 1ofTheMuslims: http://uk.youtube.com/profile?user=1ofTheMuslims
a lecture presentation by Nadir Ahmed (of www.examinethetruth.com)
The Algorithm: If a statement in a book (Quran or any other) agrees with modern scientific fact then it can be one or more of the following 8 possibilities:
A. The author was as a genius.
B. The author took a guess and got it right.
C. The author was a great scientist.
D. Coincidence; Author did not intend to make a scientific statements.
E. Common Sense.
F. Scientific fact is observable (without modern equipment).
G. Information pre-existed in history (plagiarism).
H. A source greater then man was the author of these statements.
Nader Ahmed goes through these possibilities and sees if they can apply to the scientific statements in the Quran. He also takes a look at some common logical fallacies made by critics in their studies of Quran and Modern Science, these include:
1. Fallacy of multiple interpretations.
2. The science pre-existed in other books
3. Looking for scientific errors to distract from real issues.
