I loved the paperback..really enjoyed reading Hermie's thoughts. Although it's a love story, the way Hermie interprets what he sees and hears when he's in the presence of his beloved is both touching and hilarious!
Michel Legrand's beautiful music helps to make "Summer of 42" a movie you'll remember long after the closing credits.
Some of the pictures in the video are from the play. No matter how you see "Summer of '42", it is time well spent..recalling those incredibly awkward moments we all experience the first time we fall in love!

In everyone's life, there is a Summer of '42 (or '52, etc.), a time in which we discover the joys and sorrows of growing up...and falling in love. There are hijinks and pranks, jokes and playful insults...and always the bonds of friendship. But sometimes, in those days of discovery and self-awareness, we feel the angst of that first attraction, the bittersweet highs and lows of falling seriously in love for the first time -- sometimes with the right person, sometimes not. And of course, we feel the heartbreak of losing that cherished love...wondering what on earth happened!?
Based on Herman Raucher's autobiographical novel, Robert Mulligan's 1971 classic is one of those rare coming-of-age movies that stands heads and shoulders above sex-obsessed, raunchy teen-oriented films (Private Lessons, Meatballs) that were released in later years. Starring Gary Grimes as Hermie, Jerry Hauser as Oscar, Oliver Conant as Benjie and featuring the luminous Jennifer O'Neill as Dorothy, this lyrical, hysterically funny and heartbreakingly poignant film will elicit both laughter and tears from all but the most stone-hearted viewer.
Summer of '42's plot revolves around Hermie, Oscy and Benjie who live on a small island off the East Coast of the United States. It's the summer after Pearl Harbor and all the men of military age are going off to the various fronts to fight the Axis powers. One of these is Dorothy's husband, Pete.
For Hermie, this opens up a whole world of possibilities for in between all the usual boyish things he's done with Oscy and Benjie, he's also fallen deeply in love with Dorothy. He spends time at her house making himself useful by bringing in the groceries or helping her fix things...the "how do you like your coffee?" scene is a gem, evoking all those memories of how far young guys would go to impress that "special" girl.
But before this movie fades to black to the strains of Michel Legrand's "The Summer Knows/Theme from Summer of '42", Hermie will learn that even heaven-sent opportunities come with a heavy price. Even though Hermie's fondest dream does come true (and the scenes of the preliminaries are among the funniest), the results are somewhat sobering..and heartbreaking!

The air was a freezing cold temperature so on the way to meeting up with Summer, Riley decided to stop by in the local café and grab a coffee. While she was paying she dropped her money. She bent down to grab it but as she was getting up again she bumped heads with a tall, handsome male.
Riley: I'm so sorry.
???: No, It's my fault. Sorry.
Riley: Can I have my change back? (While laughing)
???: Oh yeah, that would be wise.
Riley: Thanks.
???: I didn't catch your name, my name is-
The boy got cut off when the impatient cashier ruined the conversation.
Cashier: Would you hurry up and pay? We have other customers you know.
Riley: Gosh. No need to be rude.
Riley grabbed her coffee and left the café without thinking about carrying on talking to that boy.
Riley soon caught up with Summer in the park.
Summer: Speak.
Riley: Okay okay. I wanted to talk to you about why I didn't tell you why I stopped being friends with you all...
Summer: Well, not to be rude - but I've got a waxing appointment in ten minutes so it'll have to be quick.
Riley: Okay. I wasn't completely honest with you all. I lied to you guys. I told you that my father had passed away?
Summer: That was a lie?!
Riley: Yeah.
Summer: And I was going to be friends with you again?
Riley: Please, just hear me out.
Summer: What if I d-
Riley: SUMMER, listen. I didn't tell you guys the real reason. My father didn't die - although he might as well of done.
Summer: How could you lie about something like that?
Riley: My parent's broke up.
Summer: So that's a valid reason to lie about something like that?!
Riley: No, I'm not saying that.
Summer: Well then what are you saying?
Riley: I only lied because when my parents were together I was the special one in the group - you all had broken families and having one that was all together made me feel like I had someone you all didn't.
Summer: Riley, you could have been different any way you wanted - you didn't have to lie like this.
Riley: I could be different?! No I couldn't. There was NO individuality in our group whatsoever, we all had the same shoes, same phones, clothes, same everything
Summer: I just didn't think you'd lie about something like this.
Riley: Do you forgive me?
Summer: I have to go get my wax... sorry.
Summer ran off while shaking her head trying to get over what she had just heard. Riley soon realised that lying about death did make her stand out, but not for the good reasons.

Kevin : That sounds like a pretty wise plan
Miranda smiles and gives Kevin a hug. He smiles back and they both walk downstairs. Everybody chills for the rest of the evening.
DAY FOUR IN LA
Hannah and Bekah are eating breakfast with Nick and Frankie. Joe and Kevin are just upstairs talking.
Joe : So... what did you do last night?
Kevin : When?
Joe : When Hannah and I went into her room.. You and Miranda were there...and I kicked you out.. So where did you go?
Kevin : Just outside

Kevin : And what?!?
Joe : KEVIN! Did you guys get freaky or what?

Joe : Why do you guys think that I'm like obsessed with making out or something?!
